Moms are the best, aren’t they? It’s that time of year to let your mother know that you really do appreciate all those times she cleaned up after you, did your laundry, cooked your meals, helped you with your homework and embarrassed you to death in public. We all might have wished the ground had opened up and swallowed us whole, but moms do it because of that unwavering, unconditional love they have for their children. Does a card really cover all that? Not even close.

So, how about doing something special for Mom this year? Want to finally feed her for once? Is Mom really picky about her food? We have the solution. How does a buffet with more than 20 choices, from appetizers to desserts, steak to seafood to vegetarian and heart-healthy options sound? Pretty good, right? Nothing will ever repay moms for all the love and affection they’ve showered on their children, but one really nice meal is a start. Oh, did we mention there’s a wine list? Moms need to let their hair down once in a while, too, you know.

Please take the opportunity and join us at Lui Lui in celebrating that most wonderful of creations, the Mom, this Mother’s Day, Sunday May 9th, for both lunch and dinner buffets! Lunch will run 11:30am – 2:30pm, while dinner is 5pm – 8pm. Both are $17.00 per guest.

Just remember, our buffets are extremely popular, so make a reservation to ensure you get your place. Call 740-594-8905 to reserve a table (or three!). And, since it’s a special day, make sure to ask for the wine menu. Moms deserve to let their hair down once in a while, don’t they?

Call your mother and just say, “Thanks, Mom.” Trust us.

Remember, that’s:

Sunday, May 9th, 2010
11:30am – 2:30pm Lunch
5pm – 8pm Dinner

Now, really, call your mother.

Sundays are for relaxing and enjoying yourself. Whether you need a place to sit, sip a cup of coffee and read the newspaper, or you want to meet some friends for a light meal, Lui Lui Restaurant has you covered!

Introducing our Sunday Brunch!

Potato Pancakes

This is Lui Lui Restaurant at its lightest and most casual. (Even the morning sun streaming in the windows feels wonderful!) Our brunch menu has offerings that range from memories of Grandma’s Sunday breakfast to the continental fair of a Parisian cafe. And what is brunch without bacon? We proudly support local farmers by serving King Family Farm bacon.

Our brunch menu consists of seven mains and seven sides that may be mixed and matched to your pleasure!

Mains:

Eggs Benedict – Two soft-poached eggs served over Canadian bacon and a toasted English muffin topped with hollandaise sauce. A creamy and decadent European delight.

French Toast – Three generous pieces of our house bread dipped in egg and seasoned with cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla. Topped with fruit and served with a side of syrup. Sure to brighten anyone’s day, who knows, just may remind you of the weekend mornings of your childhood.

Potato Pancakes – Two homemade potato pancakes filled with green onion, cheddar cheese, eggs and milk. Served with a side of applesauce. It doesn’t get better than this.

Corned Beef Hash – A classic mix of our homemade corned beef, potatoes, eggs and cheese. Why fuss with something that works so well?

Eggs Benedict

Crepes with Fruit and Cream Cheese – Crepes filled with seasonal and locally grown fruit and a silky, whipped cream cheese. It’s sure to please your pallet and conjure up feelings of being on the continent!

Fruit and Yogurt with Granola – Fresh, seasonal and locally grown fruit served with Crumb’s Baker Granola and vanilla yogurt. We’re proud to serve local ingredients while providing a heart-healthy option.

Pancakes – Three light and fluffy 4″ pancakes served with a side of syrup. You can also get pancakes with bananas, fruit or chocolate chips. Great for kids (or the kid in you)!

While we’re sure that you’ll be more than satisfied by whatever dish you may order, everybody knows that, sometimes, you want just a little bit more. For that, we have a collection of side dishes that are sure to go great with any option.

Sides:

Eggs made to order – However you like ‘em, we’ll do ‘em.

King Family Farm bacon (2 pieces) – Delicious and local, just how we like it.

Sausage patty – Perfectly cooked, a great addition to any dish.

Canadian bacon – The same bacon we proudly place on our Eggs Benedict.

English muffin – Nooks and crannies, galore!

Toasted house bread – Our bread is always a hit during lunch and dinner, so brunch diners should enjoy it, just the same!

Extra syrup – Because sometimes things need to be extra sweet.

So, mark 11am – 2pm every Sunday on your calendar to come visit Lui Lui’s! (Mention this post and get a free sample side!)

Every day is a good day to eat at Lui Lui Restaurant, but between Monday and Wednesday is Sushi Tuesday!

Sushi, though gaining popularity over the last twenty years can still be a source of mystery and trepidation for many. Seaweed? Cold rice? Raw fish?! It’s okay to be skeptical, but it’s important to be open to new things. So, let us offer you a sort of beginner’s course on sushi, sashimi, and what to expect on Sushi Tuesday, so next time you stop by Lui Lui’s you can proudly and fearlessly say, “Can I see the sushi menu, please?”

What is sushi?
Sushi is a type of cuisine that, contrary to popular belief, is not simply raw fish. Cooked egg is often available in sushi dishes with no fish or meat whatsoever! If the idea of eating raw fish makes you a bit squeamish, fear not! There are still options available to you, which will be explained below.

So, what’s the raw fish, then?
Raw fish served with sushi is called sashimi. Traditionally only the finest cuts of the freshest fish are served as sashimi, and what you’ll find on Lui Lui’s menu is no exception! We use only the highest quality fish available to serve our customers. Our sushi is undoubtedly the best in the area.

Isn’t eating raw meat bad for you?
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is very strict about food procurement, storage and preparation. While there is always some inherent risk in eating uncooked food, Lui Lui follows the USDA, FDA and Health Departments’ guidelines to the letter, more often than not going above and beyond what is called for. We use only the freshest, highest quality ingredients in our sushi dishes to provide not only the best tasting sushi around, but also to ensure the health and safety of our most precious asset: you!

New York Roll, Lui Lui Style

Okay, you’ve convinced me. I’ll try some. What do you suggest?
Well, that depends on what you like, of course! First, let’s go through the basic ingredients in one of the most common sushi offerings found in the United States on our menu: the New York Roll.

The New York Roll (Lui Lui Style) consists of an inside-out sushi roll made of sushi rice, rice wine vinegar and dried seaweed (called nori in Japanese or haitai in Chinese). Rolled inside this are cream cheese, avocado and wasabi. On top is a beautiful strip of smoked salmon. Traditional sushi rolls have the nori on the outside and the fish inside, but Lui Lui’s has never been too concerned with flouting tradition!

This is the classic sushi roll geared toward the American pallette. The wasabi packs quite a punch, so if you dislike spicy foods, don’t forget to request your New York Roll wasabi-free!

I’ve heard of the California Roll, too. What’s the difference?
It’s not just some East Coast/West Coast rivalry! The California Roll looks more traditional, for one thing. It’s also much simpler. With the haitai on the outside, it looks more like what most think of when they think “sushi roll.” Wrapped inside this little green treasure chest is crab, avocado and wasabi (noticing a pattern?).

I don’t like salmon. What other options are there?
Glad you asked! At Lui Lui’s we offer salmon, white tuna, yellowtail tuna, eel, scallops, shrimp, even crab!

Rainbow Roll

But I don’t eat meat, and that includes seafood. What is there for me?
The Jade Roll is a perfect choice. Also an inside-out roll, it contains celery, cucumber, avocado, cream cheese and wasabi.

So, you just… eat it, right?
Nobody’s stopping you from just popping a roll in your mouth and enjoying! However, there are other options. When you order sushi at Lui Lui’s you’ll get more than just a plate with rice and fish. Typically, you will also get three condiments: soy sauce, wasabi and candied ginger. If you’re feeling adventerous, try this: pour some soy sauce in the little dish that accompanied the sushi, mix in a little bit of wasabi, place a slice of candied ginger on top of the piece you want, then, using chopsticks, pick up the piece of sushi by gently grasping its sides and dip it in the wasabi-soy sauce. You probably wouldn’t have expected all those ingredients (rice, raw fish, seaweed, avocado, cream cheese, soy sauce, wasabi, candied ginger) to complement each other, but it truly is something you have to try to believe.

I’ve heard of wasabi before. What is it, exactly?
Wasabi is like the Incredible Hulk: green and packs a big punch! You may have heard it called Japanese horseradish. While it is in the same family as horseradish and is also a root, it is technically different, though the flavor is quite similar. There are a couple things to remember about wasabi: first, a little goes a long, long way, so don’t get over zealous until you’ve become very familiar with how much you can handle; second, it affects your nose more than your mouth, so if you have nasal-passage issues, you may wish to stay away from it.

So that pink stuff is candied ginger?
Ah, the mysterious pink stuff. It is indeed candied ginger. It differs from it’s original uncandied version in that it lacks the peculiar heat that accompanies raw ginger. It’s sweet, cool, refreshing but very mild, and makes a wonderful contrast to its little mean, green counterpart, wasabi.

I’ve tried them, and I think they’re great! I’m ready to explore the rest of the menu.
Lui Lui customers always have such good taste! To explore the rest of our sushi and sashimi offerings, why not look at our online sushi menu? Remember, you can even order takeout!

There is a reason why the walnut looks like a tiny brain inside a shell – it is a smart snack. This popular nut helps your noggin as well as your heart and bones.
* In China, the walnut is also known as the “long life nut.” High levels of vitamin E help keep bones strong.
* Make walnuts a daily routine if you are frequently dizzy or experience problems with your short-term memory.
*Grind together walnuts and black sesame seeds; eat regularly if you have troubles falling asleep and staying asleep.
*Steam two cups of crystallized walnuts and two cups of sesame oil until sugar melts away. Eat this for a week to get rid of gallstones.
*Most importantly, walnuts are heart healthy. Packed with omega-3 fatty acids, walnuts may help reduce the risk for heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity.

In the summer, even though we may be surrounded by picnics and invitations to backyard barbecues, eating right – or even taking the time to eat – can be a surprisingly difficult thing to remember.
It is not as easy to forget to eat during the winter, because humans have a natural instinct to take in a lot of calories to stay warn. Eating is just as important in the summer. Having a poor appetite and an imbalanced diet in the summer makes many people feel very tired, sick to the stomach, dizzy and prone to headaches.
The reason is simple -people sweat. You lose a lot of sodium chloride and vitamins B, K and C through perspiration. This influences the pH balance in your stomach. To complicate this matter, your blood is more concentrated in your sun-kissed skin during the summer, so less of it is in your stomach digesting.
Here are some summer foods that you should be sure to eat to prevent discomfort:
* Bitter-tasting food contains alkaloids that can help cool down your body temperature and facilitate blood circulation. Try bitter melon, beer and green tea.
*To replenish the vitamins and minerals lost in sweat, eat watermelon, cucumber, tomatoes and beans.
*Get your vitamin K from strawberries, peaches, plums, celery and tea.
*Snag some protein from fish, lean meat, eggs, dairy, beans and duck.
