A message from Jade: Summer eating

In the summer, even though we may be surrounded by picnics and invitations to backyard barbecues, eating right – or even taking the time to eat – can be a surprisingly difficult thing to remember.
It is not as easy to forget to eat during the winter, because humans have a natural instinct to take in a lot of calories to stay warn. Eating is just as important in the summer. Having a poor appetite and an imbalanced diet in the summer makes many people feel very tired, sick to the stomach, dizzy and prone to headaches.
The reason is simple -people sweat. You lose a lot of sodium chloride and vitamins B, K and C through perspiration. This influences the pH balance in your stomach. To complicate this matter, your blood is more concentrated in your sun-kissed skin during the summer, so less of it is in your stomach digesting.
Here are some summer foods that you should be sure to eat to prevent discomfort:
* Bitter-tasting food contains alkaloids that can help cool down your body temperature and facilitate blood circulation. Try bitter melon, beer and green tea.
*To replenish the vitamins and minerals lost in sweat, eat watermelon, cucumber, tomatoes and beans.
*Get your vitamin K from strawberries, peaches, plums, celery and tea.
*Snag some protein from fish, lean meat, eggs, dairy, beans and duck.
